Day 17: That's the night the lights went out in Buenos Aires

A little reminder of Oklahoma today.  104 F.  That's how hot to got today in Buenos Aires according to Weather Underground. After a less then eventful afternoon running errands in the sweltering heat, our block lost power for 2 hours.  Our roommate said this is a somewhat common occurrence in the summer with so many people using their air conditioners.  Terry and I were in the process of studying Spanish, however with only a candle for light, I decided to go downstairs and bake.  What else do you do in a power outage?  You need to keep your blood sugar up.

Thankfully, our kitchen is well equipped with a gas oven and our roommate was happy to show us how to light it.  Cooking by candlelight was a little like Little House on the Prairie. We made chocolate cookies rolled in sugar with M&Ms embedded on top.

The power returned as we finished our cookies.  Our roommates invited us wanted to play a Colombian board game called Parqués.  A much more complicated version of Sorry! with dice (also similar to Parcheesi).

Our daily Spanish lesson was upgraded to an entertaining game of Parqués with pizza delivery.  What a great opportunity for a language exchange. We ended up playing this and dominoes for 3 hours.  You never know how little you know about your own language until you get stumped trying to explain the difference between "us" and "we".  English may be my native language but grammar was never my favorite class, that's why I have a degree in Fine Arts.

  1. I suppose you get that fine quality from your mother. Sorry you got my hips, bad english and wonderful personality from me.
