Day 19: Little Bolivia

Saturday, January 29, 2011 Posted by Elizabeth
Today we went with our roommates to a barrio called Liniers (which Terry and I nicknamed Little Bolivia).   Its a barrios on the out skirts of the Capital Federal portion of Buenos Aires and the furthest we have ventured out so far.  The population of this neighborhood is largely composed of Bolivians immigrants. It was a 30 minute trip on a direct bus near our apartment (line 34).

Stepping off the bus felt like we had traveled way more then 30 minutes. Everything looked completely different from the Buenos Aires we had come to know.  The buildings were short, the streets were narrow, the people looked different, the smells were stronger and everywhere, and it was much dirtier. More like Matamoros, Mexico (a border town across from Brownsville, TX)

Our roommates said they liked to going to this barrios because they have a different selection of fresh produce (like plantains) and it's one of the only places near us for Fried Chicken.  There were fruit and veggie stands everywhere.  You could also purchase larger quantities of common products (flour, oil, soy sauce, etc.) then what's available at the small grocery stores in town. I was looking forward to getting some avocados, but we only ended up picking up some giant pears and kilo of peaches.

We did end up stopping by a fried chicken restaurant called Copacobana. It was similar to homemade fried chicken with a crispy batter, except our sides were french fries, rice with eggs and veggies, and spaghetti noddles.  My mom would not approve of all the starches in one meal but it was good.
