Day 35: Our first month in Argentina
Sunday, February 13, 2011
It's now been a little over a month since we arrived in Argentina and so far it's lived up to our hopes. Although we haven't yet nailed down a job, we've been successful in our other goals.
Also, we just uploaded a lot of our pictures to our Picasa Web Galleries

- Found an Apartment - Our decision to opt for the shared apartment has been great. They're a really fun couple and have been great hosts showing us around the city.
- Acclimated ourselves to the public transit - We are doing a good job using the public transit (subway, buses, train). If we're near a computer we can use a really helpful website to find the fastest option (http://www.comoviajo.com). We no longer take the subway the wrong direction or get spun around walking out of the subway station.
- Found a Spanish Tutor - We decided to skip the language institute ($160-$200/20hr week per person) and instead found a Spanish tutor directly ($10/hr together). Instead searching for a Spanish tutor directly, I was hoping to circumvent the tourist pricing by finding an Argentinean teaching English. So far it looks like my tactic is paying off.
- Make it to the Beach of Elizabeth's Birthday - After two days at the pool and two trips to the beach, Elizabeth now has an amazing watch tan.
- Use our free time to get in shape - Since we left the States back on January 10th, we've walked/ran over 151 miles (using http://www.gmap-pedometer.com). Without a car, you really rack up the miles. We've signed up for a 5k (March 2nd) and we're still searching for a local gym and our first 10k. Since it's the height of the Argentinean summer, all the current 10Ks are outside the city.
- Visited a local Walmart - As silly as that sounds, in the past we've take every opportunity to see international stores like Walmart, McDonalds, etc. In Walmart, the biggest differences are usually how they sell food in the grocery section (like seafood not behind glass covered ice for anyone to weigh themselves). Also they usually have sections that more akin to Sears or Best Buy for house appliances (ie Fridges, stoves, etc).
