Day 98: Our First 10K
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
Well, this past weekend, we did it. We ran the FILA 10K in Palermo. So we can now crossed it off our Argentina To-Do List.
Over the past few years Elizabeth and I have ran a few 5Ks here an there, but neither of us would consider ourselves to be a runner. Mostly because we usually make more plans to run then we actually keep.
After a brief downpour the starting pistol sounded. The first mile was through a residential neighborhood which slowed everyone down to a trot. Right away, we jumped up on the sidewalk and it felt like were passing tons of other runners. It felt good. It wasn't until we were approaching the turn-around point that we saw just how many people were in front of us. It was a mob.
Around the 7K mark my intention was to pick up my pace for the last kilometer, but that plan was quick brushed off when I actually make it to the 9K sign. I did manage to sprint the last 100 meters but my arms were so shaking that I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a picture of Elizabeth crossing.
Terry 61:03 (9:50 pace)
Elizabeth 62:07 (10:00 pace)
Now, I was aware we were really competing with half the people out there running, but coming in 2,546 and 2,637 out of 3,312 runners doesn't really bolster the ego. To coming in around the midpoint, we will both need to speed up our pace by 60-90 seconds to come in around 55 minutes. But now we have a personal best of our own to beat, so its back to training for our next 10K (possibly May 8th and/or 29th).
