Day 232 - 233: Guayaquil, Ecuador
Thursday, September 1, 2011
Our last stop in Ecuador was Guayaquil. It's a southern port city located along a large river about 25 miles from the ocean. Because of it's location, it's used a hub for cruises and tours going to the Galapagos Islands and launching pad for the sunny beaches of southwest Ecuador. During our time in Guayaquil, we didn't make it over to any of the beaches or islands but spend our time exploring the city. Here is my list of things to see/do in Guayaquil.
Climb up to the top of Cerro del Carmen which is topped by the Monument of Christ's Heart. Also, there is a great aerial view of the city.
Malecon 2000 is the name of the main coastline located on the Guayas River. It's a nice place to take a stroll or to stop and have an ice cream
Parque Seminario is better known as Parque de las Iguanas. Located in the park is are dozens of Iguanas walking around and taking ownership of the park.
Located a bit far from the touristy areas of Guayaguil, the huge Monument La Iguana is a sight to be seen. It's beautifully built from custom tiles.
Malecon del Estero Salado runs parallel to Malecon 2000 but about 3k east. This Malecon is nicer and looks to be newer. Just like Malecon 2000 this shoreline is a great place to take a stroll and stop for dinner or a drink.
Many of the other spots we stopped at were: Iglesia La Catedral, Plaza de La Administration, Edificio del Municipio de Guayaquil, The murals del Banco Central, Cerro Santa Ana, and the Faro (lighthouse)
